Iceland Unleashed: A Two-Day Off-Road Epic Through the Golden Circle and Beyond

Earlier this summer, we had the pleasure of taking the @GoPro and @GoProNordics crew on an epic version of our Golden Circle Buggy Tour — a two-day off-road journey packed with lava trails, glacier snowmobiling, and tectonic snorkeling.

@GoPro is the global leader in action cameras, capturing intense, real-life moments from the frontlines of adrenaline. Their Nordic division, @GoProNordics, is all about pushing limits in the rugged landscapes of Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and beyond.

For this expedition, the GoPro team joined Buggy Iceland on our signature Golden Circle Buggy Tour — a high-octane, off-road twist on one of Iceland’s most famous sightseeing routes. But this wasn’t your average Golden Circle trip. We took it further, deeper, and higher, adding a snowmobile journey on Langjökull glacier and an unforgettable dive into Silfra's crystal-clear tectonic rift.

This was Iceland — GoPro style.

Day 1: Into the Highlands and Up the Glacier

The journey began in Mosfellsdalur, just outside Reykjavík, where our convoy of buggies fired up and set off across open countryside. The route took us through Stíflisdalur and past the iconic Skógarhólar, deeper into the rugged backroads along Eyfirðingaleið.

As we approached Hlöðufell, a massive shield volcano, the landscape grew more remote and surreal — lava fields stretched endlessly, framed by moss-covered ridges and snow-streaked peaks.

We turned east along Skjaldbreiðarvegur into Mosaskarð, then merged with the legendary Kjalvegur highland route. At the summit of Bláfellsháls, we stopped to take in a breathtaking panorama — Iceland’s raw interior, untouched and otherworldly.

Descending past Geldingafell, we turned onto the Skálpanes trail — our gateway to the next leg of the adventure: snowmobiling on Langjökull. Swapping buggies for sleds, we surged across the glacier’s vast white surface, GoPros rolling as the wind howled and the sky turned golden.

We ended the day descending toward Geysir, Iceland’s famous geothermal area, where we settled in for the night — still buzzing from the day’s wild ride.

Day 2: Between Continents and Through Time

After a warm meal and a good rest, we left Geysir behind and climbed again into the highlands via Haukadalsvegur, reconnecting with Skjaldbreiðarvegur — this time heading for Gullfoss, the powerful waterfall that thunders into a volcanic canyon. It was a surreal, almost cinematic setting for more GoPro footage, complete with mist, light beams, and rugged cliffs.

We descended on paved roads into Laugarvatn, a lakeside village, and refueled at Lindin Restaurant — a cozy gem known for its Icelandic comfort food and warm hospitality.

Next, we took the old Lyngdalsheiðarvegur, a lesser-known but stunning backroad flanked by ancient lava flows and sweeping highlands. Along the way, we passed the historic Laugarvatnshellir cave dwellings and made our way up Barmaskarð, past Gjábakki, and toward Hallstígur and Vatnsvík.

Finally, we arrived at Þingvellir National Park and suited up for our last experience: snorkeling in Silfra — the rift where the North American and Eurasian plates drift apart. The water, filtered through volcanic rock for decades, was unbelievably clear. Floating silently between continents was the perfect, peaceful counterpoint to the roar of engines and mountain trails.

Final Thoughts: Iceland in True GoPro Fashion

This wasn’t just a tour — it was a full-body immersion into the wild elements of Iceland.
Every twist of the buggy trail, every gust on the glacier, and every breath beneath Silfra’s glassy surface was captured by GoPros and burned into memory.

We’re proud to have guided the GoPro team through this journey — a perfect fusion of Icelandic wilderness, cutting-edge gear, and pure adventure.
Buggy Iceland didn’t just provide a way through the landscape. We became part of the story and the GoPro team left with cameras full, hearts fuller, and a deep appreciation for the untamed beauty of this incredible island.
