Itinerary
From Hrauneyjar into Landmannalaugar and beyond
Your adventure begins at Hrauneyjar Highland Center, where you meet your guide, gear up and receive a short safety briefing before heading east into the highlands. From the first stretch of trail, the scenery shifts quickly into raw volcanic terrain, open horizons and rugged back-country roads that feel far removed from the usual sightseeing routes.
Stop 1
Landmannalaugar
The first major stop is Landmannalaugar, one of Iceland’s most famous highland destinations. Known for its steaming geothermal area, colorful rhyolite mountains and dramatic wilderness setting, it is a perfect introduction to the wild beauty of Fjallabak.
Stop 2
Eldgjá volcanic canyon
After Landmannalaugar, the route continues away from the busier areas and deeper into the highlands. One of the major highlights is Eldgjá, the world’s largest volcanic canyon, created during a massive eruption that reshaped the landscape and left behind one of the most striking geological features in Iceland.
Stop 3
Álftavötn and the southern highlands
As the day continues, the buggy ride pushes farther south through remote terrain, crossing rivers and passing mountain huts, highland lakes and wide volcanic plains. This part of the tour gives the day its true expedition feel and shows a side of Iceland many travelers never reach.
Stop 4
Mælifell and black-sand scenery
One of the most memorable sections of the tour is the approach to Mælifell, the emerald-green volcanic cone rising from black desert sands near Mýrdalsjökull. The contrast of green moss, black sand and glacier views makes this one of the most surreal and photogenic landscapes in the Icelandic highlands.
The full experience
More than a sightseeing tour
This is not just about reaching famous places. The buggy route itself is a major part of the experience, with rough tracks, remote valleys, volcanic sands and dramatic mountain scenery giving the whole day a stronger sense of adventure than a standard highland transfer or sightseeing tour.
