HALF-DAY BUGGY TOUR THROUGH FJALLABAK & HRAFNTINNUSKER

Landmannalaugar Half-Day Buggy Tour

5 hours June - November Medium Pickup available

Landmannalaugar Half-Day Tour is a thrilling highland buggy adventure from Hrauneyjar. This half-day experience takes you deep into Fjallabak on rugged mountain trails, combining dramatic volcanic scenery, geothermal landscapes and remote wilderness in a shorter but still unforgettable route.

Why choose this tour

A shorter highland adventure with big landscapes

  • Half-day guided buggy tour through Fjallabak
  • Drive sandy and muddy highland trails with volcanic scenery all around
  • See Hekla, geothermal valleys and the striking Hrafntinnusker area
  • A great choice for travelers who want the highlands in a shorter format

Itinerary

From Hrauneyjar into Iceland’s wild highlands

Your adventure begins at Hrauneyjar Highland Center, where you meet your guide, gear up and receive a short safety briefing before heading east into the highlands. From the parking area, the route follows old mountain roads and volcanic tracks toward Fjallabak, quickly trading lowland scenery for rougher terrain and a much stronger sense of wilderness.

Stop 1

Hekla views and volcanic landscapes

As the route pushes deeper into the highlands, Hekla rises to the south as one of the tour’s most dramatic landmarks. One of Iceland’s best-known and most active volcanoes, it gives this section of the ride a powerful sense of scale and history while surrounding lava fields and raw mountain terrain build the true highland atmosphere.

Stop 2

Reykjadalir and geothermal scenery

The trail continues through Reykjadalir, where steam rises from the earth and mixes with black rock, brown soil and green moss. This contrast of color, heat and volcanic texture makes the route feel distinctly Icelandic and gives the tour one of its most memorable stretches.

Stop 3

Hrafntinnusker

One of the key highlights is Hrafntinnusker, a remote rhyolite mountain area known for hot springs and ever-changing highland conditions. In some seasons, glacier caves may form here, though access depends on snow and weather. The stop also connects the tour to the wider Landmannalaugar region and the famous Laugavegur trail.

Stop 4

Rúdolf waterfall and the return route

From Hrafntinnusker, the route drops toward Dalamót and passes lava fields before reaching Rúdolf, a hidden highland waterfall that adds another scenic contrast to the day. The return journey continues through more remote highland roads and sandy tracks, delivering a varied and adventurous ride all the way back to Hrauneyjar.

The half-day experience

A shorter route that still feels wild

This tour is shorter than the full-day Landmannalaugar route, but it still delivers a strong highland experience. Instead of focusing on long-distance coverage, it packs impressive geological variety into a half-day format, making it ideal for travelers who want volcanic scenery, buggy action and real off-road atmosphere without committing to a full day.
